Kyle sat, frowning at the phone.

What the fuck?

He’d just returned from the hospital again. Kaufman had been in recovery for weeks now. This time, he stepped into his office only to receive a call from his duty officer.

“You’ve been removed from the task force,” she’d said, her stern military mien even more abrasive over the phone. He’d drank with the woman before when off duty, so it was always a bit jarring when she pulled on her military mask, changing from an energetic, positive person to a badass who’d just as soon bite your ass off as look at you. She was so laid back when off duty, almost a pushover, but she would lay you out if you tried anything.

The words still rung through his head.

You’ve been removed from the task force.

Why? He didn’t understand. The conversation had been short, just those words and a statement he would be contacted with further instructions.

Was he in trouble after all for the explosion? Was he about to be punished?

He swiveled his chair, staring out the window, but not really seeing anything. The air conditioner kicked on, whirring to life. Details filtered into his brain.

Metal window frame.

Dirty blinds.

Reflections in glass.

He let the details blur and settle into nothingness until the phone ringing jarred him out of his reverie. He spun around, snatching it up.

“Avery,” he barked into the phone.

“How are things on your end?” Tristan drawled.

Kyle sneered, a slight edge in his voice. “Captain Faulk. Somehow, I have a feeling you’re to blame for the call I just received from my duty officer.”

“ ’Fraid so. I’ve got a mission for you. Meet me in my office at nine.”

Kyle sat up straight, intrigued. “See you then.”
